What We Offer
BB Gun & Archery Ranges
Perfect for Cub Scouts and younger Scouts ready to take their first shots under expert supervision.
Rifle, Shotgun & Pistol Ranges
Older Scouts experience more advanced shooting disciplines, focusing on skill development, safety, and personal growth.
Specialty Ranges
Try your hand at slingshots, tomahawk throwing, or even rocket launches at select events!
Safe & Qualified Supervision
Safety is always our top priority. All range and target activities are supervised by trained and certified staff, following both Scouting America and National Rifle Association (NRA) requirements. Here’s who keeps our ranges running smoothly:

| Rangemaster | Oversees BB gun, archery, slingshot, tomahawk, and rocketry ranges | 1 per 8 shooters (BB); 1 per range (others) |
| NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) | Supervises all firearm ranges, delivers safety briefings | 1 per range |
| NRA Instructor | Leads firearm instruction and safety (discipline specific) | 1 per 8 (rifle); 1 per shotgun/pistol shooter |
| Archery Instructor | Supervises archery range, teaches archery safety | 1 per range (if not a Rangemaster) |
| Shooting Sports Director | Supports range staffing and event standards, trains staff | 1 per district ideal |
Note: Any firearm range must be operated by at least two people: an NRA RSO and an NRA Instructor for the specific type of firearm.
Archery ranges require at least a certified Rangemaster or a USA Archery/NFAA Archery Instructor.
Planning an Event? Here’s What You’ll Need
Ask for Help: The Occoneechee Council Shooting Sports Committee is ready to assist with range staff, training, and answers to your questions.
Reserve an Approved Range: Book Camp Durant or a certified local/commercial range.
Secure Qualified Staff: Reference the chart above to determine the staff required for your event size and range type.
Verify Certifications: Ensure all volunteers have current credentials that will not expire before your event.
Safety First, Always
We follow strict protocols so Scouts can focus on fun, skill-building, and friendly competition while trusted adults keep everyone safe. More staff is always recommended for larger events to conduct efficient safety briefings and keep the activities running smoothly.
