Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Occoneechee Council
Scouting With Sabor: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Occoneechee Council!

From the beat of Latin music to the colors of papel picado, Hispanic Heritage Month isn’t just a line on the calendar—it’s a celebration that brings our Scouting family together in vibrant, joyful ways.
Here at Occoneechee Council, “heritage” isn’t just a word—it’s living history. Our very name, Occoneechee, honors a powerful Native American tribe that once flourished in our region. Now, we’re celebrating another rich legacy: the stories, traditions, and culture of Scouts with Hispanic roots from across North Carolina.
Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, our Scouts are exploring what makes our communities so unique—trying new foods, learning Spanish phrases, sharing legends and family stories, and earning adventures that connect them to the globe. Whether a Scout’s family just arrived from Ecuador or their abuela grew up in Raleigh, every story adds a new color to our tapestry.
But wait—¡más fiesta por venir! Mark your calendars for October 31, when the Occoneechee Council office will transform to honor Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Bring the whole family for a sweet celebration: kids can dress up, collect candy, and discover the meaning behind the beautiful altars and sugar skulls that make this holiday so special. Along the way, everyone will learn how Day of the Dead honors loved ones and celebrates the joy of family, memory, and tradition—a perfect match for Scouting’s spirit.
Our Scouts aren’t just leaders in their troops—they’re ambassadors for heritage, pride, and respect. Join us this month for hands-on fun, amazing history, and a chance to make (and taste) memories that last a lifetime.
Viva la aventura. Viva Scouting. Viva la herencia.
We’ll see you at the council office on October 31—don’t forget your costume, your smile, and your appetite for culture!
