VLST

Sea Scout Officers' Specialized Training

This training is for adult Sea Scout officers only. Skippers, mates, ship committeemembers, and related district and council Scouters should be encouraged to participate.

First: All Venturing adult leaders, including Sea Scout officers, are expected to take the standard Venturing training course. All Sea Scout officers are required to take the Adult Venturing Leader Basic Training before participating in this specialized training.

Sea Scout officers should understand that standard Venturing training and national program supports apply to all kinds of Venturing units. It is just as important that Sea Scout officers understand the high-school-age youth and the basic purposes of the program as any other leader in Venturing.

Second: When the Sea Scout officer has taken Adult Venturing Leader Basic Training, he becomes eligible to take part in this specia lized course. It is composed of two 2 and one-half hour sessions that introduct adults to the Sea Scout Manual, and other program reference materials. Without a thorough understanding of these resources, the leader is seriously disadvantaged. Sea Scouts should not expect their leaders to know all the answers, but they can expect their leaders to know where to find them. This course serves that end.

Woodbadge for the 21st Century

Wood Badge is a training course for Scouters which finally results in their receiving a certificate, a small neckerchief, a leather slide, and two small wooden beads on a leather thong. Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, directed the first course in 1919 and gave each of the participants one of the beads which he had captured from the African chieftain Dinizulu. Thus did the course name develop, for its symbol was literally a badge of wood.

Wood Badge is, further, Scouting's premier training course. Baden-Powell designed it so that Scouters could learn, in as practical a way possible, the skills and methods of Scouting. It is first and foremost, learning by doing. The members of the course are formed into patrols and these into a troop. The entire troop lives in the out-of-doors for a week, camping, cooking their own meals, and practicing Scout skills.

Council Roundtable

Council coordinated meeting is a place for district and council Scouters to gain pertinent information necessary to conduct the business of helping unit leaders affect the lives of youth. Specifically this meeting helps those district and council Scooters focus their efforts towards supporting the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, which reads:

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

Climb On Safely

Climb On Safely is the Boy Scouts of America's recommended procedure for organizing BSA climbing/rappelling activities at a natural site or a specifically designed facility such as a climbing wall or tower. Boy Scout Rock Climbing.

Young people today seek greater challenges, and climbing and rappelling offer a worthy challenge. The satisfaction of safely climbing a rock face is hard to top. While introduction of the Climbing merit badge in spring 1997 spurred interest in these activities through the BSA, the proliferation of climbing gyms and facilities has also made climbing and rappelling readily available throughout the United States.

The Philmont leadership is committed to making NAYLE a very special experience. You will live in a patrol setting at Rocky Mountain Scout Camp where you will use leadership skills to resolve exciting and challenging back country situations. This week will conclude with a closing challenge for each Scout to build upon the Legacy of Waite Phillips, the benefactor of the Philmont Scout Ranch.
