Camp Campbell

Introduction

Occoneechee Council leases and operates a primitive camp on Kerr Lake just North of Henderson, North Carolina. At one time this was a long-term resident camp...with an administrative building, latrines, & waterfront. Today it is used primarily as a primitive camp and as an aquatic weekend activity camp by troops and crews. In addition the Order of the Arrow and several Districts have held events (Fellowships, Camp-O-Ree,etc.) here.

Camp Campbell is approx 75 miles from Cary, located North of Henderson NC, at the NC/VA border. Travel time from point-to-point is approx 1.5 hours.
Leave Cary towards I-40 West. Head towards RTP on I-40 West and take exit 281, Miami Blvd towards US 70.
Travel west and look for I-85 North exit. EXIT 285 North Expect heavy traffic on late Friday afternoon.
Travel north on I-85 and take exit 214. (approx 35 miles) This is for NC 39. Go to top of exit and turn left over bridge, continuing in a northern direction. Note mileage on bridge.
NC 39 will take you into a small community, Townsville. The Townsville Post Office (landmark, small red brick) will be on the left, approx 11.4 miles from I-85/39 bridge. Continue north on NC 39
Approx 16.2 miles from I-85/39 bridge, (4.8 miles from Townsville PO), NC 39 will fork. Take the right-hand fork, leaving NC 39 and turning right onto Rock Springs Church Road. The Rock Springs Baptist Church (landmark) is in the vertex of this fork/intersection. Past Church on your left and continue... Rock Springs Church Road is also known and marked as SR 1356. Look for sign marked Occoneechee Boy Scout Camp Campbell just before fork.
Approx 16.2 miles from I-85/39 bridge, (4.8 miles from Townsville PO), NC 39 will fork. Take the right-hand fork, leaving NC 39 and turning right onto Rock Springs Church Road. The Rock Springs Baptist Church (landmark) is in the vertex of this fork/intersection. Past Church on your left and continue... Rock Springs Church Road is also known and marked as SR 1356. Look for sign marked Occoneechee Boy Scout Camp Campbell just before fork.
When you see the NC/VA state border marker, the road name CHANGES to Epps Fork Road. NC/VA border is 16.4 miles from I-85/39 bridge.
Approx 1/2 mile further, there will be an intersection with trash dumpsters, (landmark) on the left. This is the intersection of Epps Fork Road and Mill Creek Road. Turn left at the dumpsters on to Mill Creek Road.
Travel 0.5 miles to the entrance gate to Camp Campbell on the RIGHT. If you reach an area where the road comes up to the water, you have gone a bit too far (missed the gate).
Follow the road to the first main fork in the road. There is a small shelter with power lines. (landmark, looks like a bus stop shelter). Take the left fork at this point. The troop typically camps further down this road.
Note: If you drive to the right at this fork, you will come to a building. Within this building is the well and water source.

Note: If you unlock the gate, be sure to lock it behind you !!
